Hobby that costs you nothing

Most hobbies have some kind of cost associated with them and anything as exciting as motorsport can be hugely expensive if you decide to become a competitor.

But there’s one way to be involved at the heart of the action and that’s by becoming a marshal.

No race meeting could take place without the huge band of volunteers behind the scenes. Men and women of all ages are involved in a whole host of varied duties involving fire-fighting, first aid, dealing with incidents, communications and logistics

So how do you become involved? The Castle Combe circuit near Chippenham is a good place to start as its organising club is well known for its very high marshalling standards, having been recognised by the sport’s governing body, the MSA with an award for the last two years.

Part of its success is owed to its annual Marshals Training day, this year taking place on the 21 March. The day provides potential race day marshals with an insight into the skills required and no experience is required.

The Chief Marshal of the Castle Combe Racing Club, which runs the car race meetings at Castle Combe, is Nicki Fawdington. She said, “Potential new marshals are always made very welcome. If you have an interest in cars or motorsport and would like to be more involved than just watching, then getting involved at a race meeting is a way of doing so without it costing you a penny. Although marshals have to be vigilant and on their toes at all times, they still get to watch some of the best racing around without it costing them a penny – and they are closer to the action too!”

To take part, simply turn up at the circuit by 8-00 am on the day. There is no obligation or cost and no special equipment is needed, apart from outdoor clothing. Refreshments are provided.

The event takes place in the Wiltshire College building, just inside the entrance to the Westway car park and runs until 17-00.
